Cell Phones Rule In School

Students should not be allowed to have cellular devices in high schools. Since the invention of cell phones, many have used them but have abused the rights of having a cellular phone. Cell phones are a good thing to have when one is in trouble, but what is the use of having it in school when a student is learning "diddly-squat." Cell phones are used for emergencies; kids think of it as a hot trend, and parents feel more secure when their kids have one. However, what is the point when they are distracting the students from learning during classes. Cell phones cause interruptions to others trying to learn, and they may even use it to their advantages in an unlawful manner. I feel that having a cell phone in school is not a necessity for education such as a notebook or a pen.

It is unwise for students to have a cell phone in high school for many reasons. Cell phones are given to students primarily because it is a way to get in contact with someone in case of an emergency. But what good of an emergency is texting in class and playing games when the teacher is teaching. Texting is a quick, quiet, and easy way for communicating while in class, without disrupting the class like passing notes; however, it still distracts the students from paying attention. According to Scholastic news, a former teacher Jesse Scaccia states "I can tell you that cell phones don’t belong in the classroom. A student with a cell phone is an uninterested student, one with a short attention span who cares more about his social life than education." With technology developing every day, new programs coming out, and student being able to add applications to their phones, i.e., games or even access the Internet; encourages entertainment in classrooms rather than listening to a teacher educate students.

Parents allowed their kids to carry a cell phone because they feel closure that if their child is in danger they can call for help. What the parents doesn’t know it that by allowing their kids to have a cell phone they are attracting danger. Many students are jealous and feel’s the urge to rob or hurt another student for their phone. The fancy phones that the parents are giving their children can be the reason why their child becomes the victim of a savage attack or even lose their life.

Many students think that having a cell phone is cool, even though many of them do not need it. Having a cell phone in the minds of students is a new trend; they just want a cell phone because they want a cell phone not because they need one. They don't want to feel left out of the cyber world where every teenager seems to have one. What students don’t realize is that having a cell phone may make them look cool, but having one cause’s disruption towards their education and affects learning abilities. According to www.foxnews.com, "Bells aren’t the only things ringing in school these days. Cell phones are, too." When a student’s phone rings in class, it is like a domino affect. The cell phone rings and causes disruption, it then causes a distraction, which then causes the teacher too loose the student’s attentions. For students to be able to learn, they must be in a stable environment without any distractions. A simple ring and even a loud vibration can be heard across class.

I think one of the major reasons why students should not be allowed to use cell phones in school is because many students take advantage of them and use it as a device to cheat. Many people use their cell phones to cheat on their test’s and the teacher is unaware. A student can cheat off of another student even though they are sitting across the class from each other, by simply texting each other the answers to the questions. According to The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program, there was a situation with two students at Millport High School, "Both Laura and Jessica are in the 10th grade, next door neighbors, best friends and have all the same classes. They were caught by the teacher texting each other answers during a test while one hand was in the lap holding the phone and the other on the desk. They both received a zero." With the use of phones, we can access the Internet and people also use the Internet to cheat on their exams.

I feel that cell phones in school should one day be banned from students. It is the causation of many problems. There is no need for a student to have a cell phone in high school. If a student needs to make a call, they can go to the main office. Also, if parents are concerned with their child’s safety, they can call the school to make sure their kid is where they are suppose to be. Personally speaking I knew many kids who passed test by cheating with the usage of a cell phone and I don’t think it is fair to the other students who are not cheating. Cell phones in class are doing nothing good for the people of the future. Rather than causing distractions, disruptions, and students getting into more trouble; cell phones should just be banned from schools

Vegetarian Not The Way To Go

Statistics show that there are about three percent of vegetarians in the United States, which is approximately six to eight million adults who are true vegetarians. Choosing to be a vegetarian is an unhealthy and unethical choice, but in the eyes of many it may seem to be the best choice. Many may argue that being a vegetarian is the most healthiest diet a person can consume, which I disagree. Vegetarians may have a proper nutritious diet, but they do not have a balance of the things they eat and may not get enough of the right nutrients or even may not get any at all. This can lead to many health issues and eating disorders. People even become vegetarians because they want to change the way they eat to loose weight, but by doing they’re causing more harm to themselves. Many people do not see or are unaware of the affects of being a vegetarian, until later on in life when all damage is done. Being a vegetarian can even be a matter of life and death. There is nothing worse than when a person realizes that throughout their life they have been triggering their own death, by feeding themselves to death.
Being a Vegetarian can be the causation of why many people have low bones density. In a report from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition many "vegetarians and vegans ( a type of vegetarian who does not eat products from animals) tend to have a lower body mass index, which increases the risks for osteoporosis." Osteoporosis is a medical condition where the bones in your body become fragile. In a study of a total of 2,749 participants, the bone mineral destiny of about four percent of the vegetarians where lower in the neck and spine compared to the people who consumed meat as part of their diet. The vegans have a even higher percent of low bone mineral destiny, at six percent. The reason why many vegetarians and vegans have a higher risk of low bone destiny is because their lack of consumption of dairy food products. Dairy products are high in vitamin D and calcium and that makes the bones in our bodies stronger and heather. Also many people do not even consume the substitutes products like soy milk, instead of real milk because either they may not like the taste or even because of financial reasons.
Vegetarian is the cause of why many people have problems with their dietary habits causing, the people to have eating disorders. In a research done in Minnesota by the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 107 participants from ages 12-20 who are vegetarians and 214 non-vegetarian youths were surveyed. The results of the survey shows that kids who are developing from a child into a adult and called themselves vegetarians, " had higher rates of eating disorders." The vegetarians also "had higher rates of dieting, binge eating, intentional vomiting, and laxative use." The reason why many people start being a vegetarian is because they want to lose weight and it can be a way to "express independence." People used the idea of being a vegetarian as an excuse to themselves that they are being healthy because we have the idea groomed in us to think that being a vegetarian is the most healthiest choice. What people don’t realize that in reality they are hurting themselves and are oblivious to see that outcomes and causation of the eating disorders that comes with began a vegetarian.
Being a Vegetarian may be the right choice in our minds, but in studies shown it is not the correct choice. The risks that comes with being a vegetarian can cause major health issues. A person should not deprive themselves of not having enough of the right nutrients or a vitamins for their body. Everyone should be health and eat a balance of right foods. Many people think that becoming a vegetarian is the best way to lose weight, which is not true. People can loose weight by not becoming a vegetarian by having a balance diet and eat in moderation, while having the proper nutrients to be health

Thesis Paragraph

Vegetarians vs. Meateaters
Throughout the world, everyone’s dietary habits are different. I would say when it comes to eating there are two kinds of people: the vegetarians and the meat eaters. In my point of view, being a vegetarian or a person who eats too much meat is a risk you take in life. There are many significant differences between the two. Some people don’t realize the effects of being a vegetarian. When it comes to eating, many vegetarians do not have a proper nutritious diet, therefore their intake of calories in their daily lives will not lead to a successful healthy life. The people who primarily eat meat are also in danger just like the vegetarians they don’t have a proper nutritious diet as well. I firmly disagree with people who are vegetarians and people who primarily consume meat. I do agree and think that being a vegetarian or just some primarily meat eaters are two complete extremes. No one should deprive themselves from nutrients that they need for their body to survive and be healthy while having consideration of balancing everything that one consumes. There is nothing worse than when a person realizes that throughout their life they have been triggering their own death, by feeding themselves to death.

The New Literacy

The article The New Literacy by Clive Thompson is about the way kids, and how they write and what has change from the past. The article states how kids today can’t write and technology is to be blamed. Lunsford who is a professor who disagrees says "technology isn’t killing our ability to write. It’s reviving it and pushing our literacy in a bold new directions." According to her study from 2001 to 2006 she collected writing’s samples of emails, in-class assignments, essays and etc. Based on her conclusions she stated that she "did not find a single example of texting speak in an academic paper." Rather than the technology has hurt us, it has made the kids write more after leaving school, because most people in the past after leaving do not ever write a paragraph again unless it is for a purpose. She also found that the students, when the students write they write for an audience which helps them write better. But when they do in-class writing they only write for the professor and the only purpose is for them to get a grade. I agree with Lunsford that writing on the computer is not harming us nor it is affecting the way we write in class. The new literacy is helping us because many we write more when we are on the computer.

1) What is the difference between writing to an audience and writing for a professor?

2) How is writing on the computer different from writing on paper ?

3) Does writing on the computer benefit us more than writing on paper?

R U oNLiNe

The article Online, R U Really Reading by Motoko Rich develops an argument, whether kids of the 21th century are gaining any knowledge from reading online, rather than reading books. The standardized tests of many teenagers have been declining, and some people say that the cause of that is the hours that are spent on the internet. The people who disagree say "that internet has created a new kind of reading," which I think is true but the new reading is not what our schools are prepping us for in our lives. Deborah Konyk who is the mother of Nadia Konyk would like her daughter for a change actually read a book, but her fifteen years-old daughter spends at least six hours in her day on the internet reading and listening to music from different sites.

Does this mean when we are on the internet we are reading or are we not? From the way I see it, I consider reading from the internet is more or no less than reading from a book, they are the same. The definition of the word reading is an interpretation of a text, therefore once a person is reading whether from a book or the internet and they are understanding what has been read or abstract the information from the text, I would believe that is reading. But we have to give account for everyone because everyone is not the same. Some people can read a book and some cannot, some can spend time on the computer and read online and others can’t.

Hunter, Gaudet who is sixteen years of age has a learning disability and he finds that reading from the internet is more comfortable for him. It depends on the person, I feel the older generation is having a hard time reading on the internet that is why they are worrying about their kids reading online. I also think that the board of education should spend more money on education for their students. In these days the world is changing and it has been more technologically advance like reading from the internet not the books. So I think the board of education should change the way they test kids and how we have been thought in school. They should adjust to the new ways of learning rather than staying with the old ways. Maybe we would get better grades or tests and better grades in school.

1) Should the board of education change the way the teachers teach and test the kids in classrooms?
2) How does reading online hurt someone’s reading skills?
3) What is the best for kids books or the internet for reading?

New Media

The article "New Media and the Slow Death of the Written Word" talks about two significant views based on the issue of new media, which is the internet. Some people feel that the new media is destroying the old ways of printed literature. They think the traditional printed literature will slowly fade away. Mark Zeltner who is the author of this article favor’s print on paper over a computer screen. He says "computer screens are hard on the eyes," I agree with what he is saying that the computer is the cause of many peoples having eye problems and been on that computer for a long time is harmful for your eyes. On the other hand I also disagree with his statement "I note that you couldn’t fold a computer screen up and carry it in your book bag," but with today’s technology we have laptops that many carry around, with wireless connection everywhere, and we can log onto the web at anytime.

I personally feel that the new media is a better more efficient and faster way of reading and interpreting text. Just because we used to spend hours and hours researching using books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias do not mean we lack intelligence it simply mean, we now have the technology to get researching done faster. We are known in the age where technology is advancing and it is there for us to use to our advantage, but yet we cannot be lazy and have it do all the work for us. The new technology also allows us to make reading more fun, by using videos, pictures, and other new exciting ways, instead of the boring old ways of printed text. This new idea can help us comprehend the works of writers better. Will printed text ever fade away though? In my opinion I don’t printed text will ever be gone. Just like how radios did not go away after televisions were created, printed text will still be around even if the new media is the new printed text.

Mark Zeltner created ten rules for students who are learning to write for the new-media. For the most part I agree with all of Mark Zeltner rules. Im not saying that a writer should follow his ten rules, all I’m saying that it is a good guide for anyone who is writing for the new-media. Today new-media writers should write in shorter articles for people to read, which Zeltner talks about in his first and second rule. But the shorter is not always better, a new-media writer should try to put the essential points needed to be addressed, of whatever he or she is writing about and make it short so that readers do not get bored. When a person scrolls down a page and looks at a piece of work he or she is reading, if text is too long it can affect the "reader’s ability to comprehend and understand what is written."

Rules four, five and six talks about the usage of pictures, sounds, and video clips. I don’t quite agree that sounds and video clips are more important than words, I just think it is more exciting ways of writing and it is a more entertaining way of reading. With rules eight and nine I could understand hyperlinks could be helpful to the writer, but it can’t also side track a reader from understanding what the point is that the writer is trying to make. I don’t agree with rule ten, I don’t see why a new media writer is any different from a person who is writing for printed media. For my views I think writing is writing no matter where it is, if on a paper or a screen, it doesn’t matter, once the writing finishes his or hers point that they are trying to make and the reader can understand what the writer is writing about.

21 to Smoke

Smoking is legal at the age of eighteen, but you cannot gamble or buy alcohol until the age of twenty-one. In my opinion smoking is just as bad as gambling and alcohol consumption, if not worse, thats why the legal age of smoking should be at twenty-one. Starting smoking at an early age can lead to multiple complications later on in life. If someone starts smoking at a young age, it can become addicting and it can lead to many health issues as an adult or the possibilities of complications can even start at an early stage of one’s life. The addiction can lead to cancer, amputations of different body parts, and be harmful in other ways. Although the cigarette companies know that their product is putting many lives at risk, they still make their profits by killing and hurting the people and we are the ones who help contribute to our deaths by buying the cigarettes and encouraging the cigarettes companies to make more. Therefore if we can raise the age which allows people to buy cigarettes now, we can help the people from having fewer health issues and maybe even reduce the number of smokers in the future.

Does an IQ Test Measure a Person's Intelligence

An intelligence quotient test, also known as an IQ test, measures a person's intelligence. I personally dont believe that an IQ test can test someones knowledge. Some factors such as if the person is not a good test taker, or can not concentrate under pressure would cause the IQ test to not be a reliable source when determining there knowledge. Many students are very intelligent but they have difficult time when taking tests. IQ tests are an insufficient way of testing one's true knowledge.

Uniform or Not

Everyone should be allowed to express themselves in any which way they are pleased. Some students are not given the opportunity which prevents them from portraying their true character. Many students are forced to wear uniforms in school, but should that be an obligation. The way person dresses shows their creativity, and it is a way a child can express him or her self. Not wearing uniforms are students only way of being unique and distinguishing themselves by how they would like to be recognized. If a child not wearing his or her uniform, they would be send home or penalized which is disruptive to the student’s learning. Therefore should kids be forced to wear what they don’t want to wear.

Google and The Internet Is The Blame For our Stupidity and The Dying Newspaper Industry

The internet is an online source where, people can get almost any type of information need for them. The internet is like a mother for you when doing research for information, but in actuality is it making us Stupid. In the opinion of Nicholas Carr the writer of the article Is Goggle Making Us Stupid? , Is saying that because of the internet "deep reading used to come naturally has become a struggle"which he is basically saying those reading long passages like two or three pages use to be the thing of the past, because of the internet he lost the interest in reading? I disagree with Nicholas Carr opinion you can’t blame the internet for your lack of reading and understanding, just because the internet is there does not mean you have to let it run your life and let it established the type of reader you become. The internet is a privilege to explore new information, and it should be used a source to help you, not to make you "stupider."
In the article The Internet Is No Substitute for the Dying Newspaper Industry by Chris Hedges, Hedges made some points that I agree with him but also I disagree. He is talking like the internet will end civilization like really!, I don’t think it’s that serious. Although everyone today basically has some type of online access, which means that almost everyone turns to the internet and does not need to buy an newspaper to get information. The internet is taking the place of the newspapers is the point which I agree with Hedges, because the newspaper industries are losing money. Soon newspaper wont be around any more because they would not be needed and everyone that has a job working for newspaper companies would lose their job. I could understand that he fears that people would lose their jobs, but would the internet really hurt us. If the internet makes us so mindless and makes our reading skills get demolished, do you that it would be public to us. I think Hedges has been a little dramatic with the idea that the lack of newspaper would end the world, it won’t, we’ll find some way to get over it. But just like Nicholas Carr, I don’t agree the internet is taking away from our reading skills. If a person wants to read novel or an article sometimes it could be done online, I don’t see the problem with idea reading it on a screen or actually holding it in your hand. I think it’s all up to the person and their mind. If you want to become a better reader, all you have to do is put the time, effort and don’t be lazy and you will benefit from it.

The Onion Reviews

One of the news article talks about former President Bush, just relaxing on his porch thinking about how he served as President for the United States for almost a decade. The article is trying to say now that former President Bush is relaxing and enjoy his life after having done all the damage while he was in power. The article is mocking President Bush, how he is remeber all he did in the past 8 years he serve as President and what he did.
I also viewed a video which i thought was hilarious. The video is talking about September 11th and how it is a day for people to think about the ones who past, therefore in honor they would not Masturbate when going home. Check it out http://www.theonion.com/content/video/americans_observing_9_11_by?utm_source=b-section

Student Takes Cocaine to School, Mistaken for Candy ?

Queens - Young Joseph Eps Jr. 4 years old, gave his friends cocaine at Shirwinds Public School, when told by his father it was just candy. On Friday, September 18th Joseph Eps Senior was seen taken out in handcuffs from his apartment on Pine Hill Drive, after been busted for possession and dealings of cocaine and obtaining a gun without a license.

" This is absurd and ridiculous behavior from my point of view" 43-year-old Rob Goldstein, fathers of Jason Goldstein who is a friend of Eps Jr and also a personal friend of Joseph Eps Senior. "I’ve known them for a while, but I would never expect this to have happened."

After going to school with the cocaine in his book bag to share with his friends, Mrs. Gorden said she saw the strange looking package been taken out of Joseph’s book bag, ready and eager to share with his friends. When asked by Mrs. Gorden to Joseph "What you got
there ?" Joseph replied "Oh Mrs. Gorden it’s just candy my dad gave to me." As Mrs. Gorden asks Joseph to see what the strange package was only then she realize it was cocaine. Mrs. Gorden then called the main offices who send security guards who took the package of cocaine and along with Joseph Jr and called the police.

Oblivious to what is going on, Joseph Jr was scared and frighten by the police, when he was questioned about, where he had got the cocaine from. Which was only then that the police, sent for Joseph Sr. at his apartment. Joseph Senior pleaded that Joseph Jr is the only thing he has left on this earth, after his wife died in a car crash two years back. He said "I only started to use cocaine to help myself relieve pain from the death of my wife and not to give to kids, Im sorry." !!!BLOGS!!!

Twenty-first Journalism is now blogging? Can this actually be a true statement? Many would say yes and others will agree that blogging is just an easier way "so-called Journalist" can put out their ideas and views on subjects and situations. Today Journalism has taken a new aspect of not to be done on newspapers nor magazines, but it has been published on the internet where many people spend their time. Blogs allow the freedom of people to write whatever they want, the truth, the lies, or their opinion on others works or yet it’s a way of expressing itself. The issue with blogging is that we the readers are not sure whether the Blogs we are reading is a factual piece of work or it’s just one person’s thoughts.
Michael Skube is one man who despises blogging saying it’s a "noisy with disputation and becoming hatred of enemies real and imagined." He can’t seem to understand why bloggers are writing for free, when Journalists who write, have been paid for their work. Michael Skube is furious with that facts that even though bloggers are writing for free, yet they are writing whatever they want too without having to follow what editors and publishers telling them to write. He feels that bloggers have more freedom and are taking away from the Journalists who spend their time doing researching, analyzing and actual work. The Journalists are feeling that blogging is not valid way of going about writing about issues and political views, yet it has been done. Michael Skube fears that the information that is getting out is not the truth, but it is more opinion based, than factual information.
Both Michael Skube and Andrew Sullivan have different intakes on blogging. Michael Skube is a Journalist for the Los Angeles Times. Then there is Andrew Sullivan who is also a Journalist but also he is a blogger. Andrew Sullivan in a sense feels that blogging is better, more important in the sense that it’s his thoughts and feelings, more of one stating his or her opinion. Michael Skube feels blogging is not the way to go, it is just taking away from Journalism because the works that are written are not factual based it is all opinion. Both Andrew Sullivan and Michael Skube both disagree on that fact that one thinks Blogging is good, they both agree that blogging is all about peoples feelings and opinions.
Both articles have different views and both writers have a lot of information to back up their arguments. But I would agree with Andrew Sullivan. Blogging is a more excited and new way to express works and views about situations. Also I think most people today spends a lot of time on the internet rather than reading a newspaper or a magazine. Therefore blogging will be more open to the people to read rather than newspapers and magazines. The writing of Blogs would be stronger because blogging is more of a person’s thoughts and feeling. Even though blogging is not based on facts, sometimes people would find opinions of others more fascinating and amusing rather than reading about the actual facts.

Richmond Hill

Queens is a borough of New York City and it is most famous for a place of many cultures, and it’s diversity of people. All most anything in the world you can ever desire, you will surely find it in Queens. Queens is made up of every culture, it is not primarily dominated by one group of people or one only type of religion. A part of Queens called Richmond Hill is place where I like to call my home. Richmond Hill is the neighborhood that I have live in for my entire life. Richmond Hill is located in the central-southern part of Queens.
Through the past years have taken many changes and from time to time it has been occupied by varies of different cultures. The first types of people that were originally there were many German, Italian, and Irish families. Currently Richmond Hill is populated by the Asian Americans and Caribbean Americans. Around the area in which I live, there are many Guyanese and Trinidadian who have settle here and have kept and followed their religious cultures when migrated to their home.
Richmond Hill is place where there are a lot of middle class working families. There are all different kinds of small businesses that are open around Richmond Hill. In the past there has been a rivalry between two high schools that serves the community. One of them is named John Adams High School which is where I had attend and the other is Richmond Hill High School. Both of the schools are always in competition with sports. There were some stories that I have heard where the kids after school would get together and come to each other schools and it would be like a war. Today both schools are not as bad as they were but back in day, but they are still competition with each other.
A famous place that I would like to talk about that is partly located in Richmond Hill is called Liberty Ave. Liberty Avenue as many people would refer to it as"coolie vile"does not only have a lot of Indian people but also, Liberty Avenue is one of the most diverse places in Queens. The place has a wide range of West Indian Cuisines, with a mixture of some Spanish, Jamaican, and Chinese restaurants. Also there the fast food places, which attracts the attention of a lot of young kids. It’s like a mini shopping area where you can get a wide variety of all clothing and all essential necessitates.
Liberty Avenue is known for the place which allows the Phagwah parade. Phagwah which is also refers to as Holi, is the celebration of the festival of colors. Talking from experience, every year I attend the parade and it was one the biggest celebration that is held in Richmond Hill. Mainly the festival started in India which the Guyanese and Trinidadian’s have adopted the culture. Thousands and thousands of people from around the five boroughs and even from different states, all gather for this one day.
Phagwah is always a Sunday in the month of March, people come to view this wonderful experience. At the parade many people from other cultures and different ethnic backgrounds, have taken part. Every year I look forward for this event because it is a lot of fun; after the parade we go to the neighborhood park which is named Smokey Park and everyone plays around with different colors of powder. Also at the park you meet different people and old friends that you haven’t seen in a while. I remember one year my entire family and friends went to the park. That was the best year because it was such a memorable moment, and we had a lot of fun.
