Students should not be allowed to have cellular phones in high schools. Since the invention of cell phones many have used them, but have abused the rights of having a cellular phone. Cell phones are a good thing to have when in trouble, but what is the use of having it in school when a student is learning "diddly-squat." Cell phones are used for emergencies, kids think of it as a hot trend, and parents feel more secure when their kids have one, but what is the point when they are distracting to the students from learning. Cell phones cause interruptions of others trying to learn and they many even use it to their advantages in a unlawful manner. I feel that have a cell phones in school is not a necessity for an education like a notebook or a pen.
It is unwise for students to have a cell phone in high school. Cell phones are given to students primarily because it is a good way to get in contact with someone if in case of an emergency. But what good of an emergency is texting in class and playing games when the teacher is teaching. Texting is a quick, quiet and easy for of communicating while in class, without disrupting the class like passing notes, but it distracts the students from paying attention. According to Health & Wellness Resource Center a former teacher Scaccia J. states that " I can tell you that cell phones don’t belong in the classroom. A student with a cell phone is an uninterested student, one with a short attention span who cares more about his social life than education." With technology developing every day, new programs coming out and student being able to add app’s to their phones, like games or even access the internet; encourages entertainment in classrooms rather than listen to a teacher lecture and learn somthing.
Parents allowed their kids to carry a cell phone because they feel closure, that if their child is in danger they can call for help. What the parents doesn’t know it that by allowing their kids to have a cell phone they are attracting danger. Many students are jealous and feel’s the urge to rob or hurt another student for their phone. The fancy phones that the parents are giving their children can be the reason why their child becomes the victim of a savage attack or even lose their life.
Students think that having a cell phone is cool, even though they do not need it. Having a cell phone in the minds of students is a new trend, they just want a cell phone because they want a cell phone. They don't want to feel left out. The students don’t realize is that having a cell phone is may make them look cool, but having one cause disruptions in class. According to foxnews.com, "Bells aren’t the only things ringing in school these days. Cell phones are, too." When a student phone rings in class, it is like a domino affect. Cell phone rings and causes disruption, which causes distraction, which then the teacher loses the students attentions. For the students to be able to learn they must be in a stable environment without any distractions. A simply ring and even a loud vibration can be heard across class.
I think of the major reasons why I think students should not be allowed to use cell phones in school is because many students take advantage of them as use it as a device to cheat. Many people use their cell phones as a way to cheat on tests. A student can cheat off another student even though they are sitting across the class from each other, simply by texting each other the answers to the questions. According to The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program, there was a situation with two students at Millport High School. "Both Laura and Jessica are in the 10th grade, next door neighbors, best friends and have all the same classes. They were caught by the teacher texting each other answers during a test while one hand was in the lap holding the phone and the other on the desk. They both received a zero." With the use of phones, we can access the internet and people use the internet to cheat on exams.
I feel that cell phones in students possession in school should one day be banned. It is the causation of many problems. There should not be a need for a student to have a cell phone in high school. If a student needs to make a call, they could go to the main office and if parents are concern is their child is safe, they should call the school to make sure their kid is where they are suppose to be. Cell phones in class are doing nothing better for the people of the future rather than causing distractions, disruptions, and students getting into more trouble in and out of schools.

ReplyDelete1A) This essay will be about the banning of cell phones in high schools.
1B) The writer supports the banning of cell phones.
1C) He grabs the reader's attention by stating the main points of his essay which explain why it is bad for a student in high school to have a cell phone with them.
1D) Besides fixing a few grammatical errors, the introduction is well written.
2)
-Cell phones distract students from learning. Instead, they learn "diddly-squat."
-Interrupt others trying to learn.
-Some students take advantage of having their cell phones in class and use them unlawfully.
-Cell phones encourage entertainment in classrooms, rather than education.
-Owning 'fancy' cell phones encourages robbery, which may include violent attacks as well.
3)
-Parents want their children to have cell phones in case of emergencies.
-Having a cell phone makes the student feel "cool" and "in with the crowd."
4A) The writer makes great points about why cell phones shouldn't be allowed in high schools, stating that they disrupt the learning environment, but I don't know how he can go against parents wanting their children to have cell phones in case of an emergency. If something were to happen to the child, the parents need some form of communication to be aware of what's going on with their child.
4B) The writer's strongest point is stating all the reasons and explaining why cell phones should be banned in high schools.
4C) The writer doesn't include enough counterarguments in his essay. Though he included a good counterargument which was that cell phones are needed in case something bad happens, he wasn't able to deal with this opposition well.
4D) Good organization.
4E) Some use cell phones to "facilitate drug deals in school." -Taken from http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/4903/students_and_cell_phones_controversy.html.
4F) "If a student is slow to copy notes from the board, pictures can be taken of the missed notes and accessed later. Ditto sending notes to absent classmates." - Taken from http://teachingtechnology.suite101.com/article.cfm/fair_cell_phone_use_in_schools.
-He can deal with this opposition by saying that a student doesn't need to take a picture of the notes if he/she is too slow to copy them down. He/she can go to another student who did get a chance to copy down the notes after class or afterschool and copy them from him or her.
5) The thesis should remain as it is but are you specifically talking about high schools or schools in general including middle schools?
6)
"I feel that have a cell phones in school is not a necessity for an education like a notebook or a pen."
-I feel that having a cell phone in school is not a necessity of education like a notebook or a pen.
"With technology developing every day, new programs coming out and student being able to add app’s to their phones.."
-With technology developing every day, new programs coming out and students being able to add applications to their phones..
7) Check any grammatical errors you made. Also you're missing statistics to support your argument, which can be easily found online.
